Pictou Landing First Nation: “We are sticking to the January 31, 2020 date”

It didn’t take Northern Pulp long to start issuing thinly veiled threats. Just before noon Monday, Nova Scotia Environment Minister Gordon Wilson announced that the company that owns the Pictou County pulp mill would have to submit a full environmental assessment report for its new effluent treatment facility.

Environment Minister Gordon Wilson orders two-year environmental assessment of Northern Pulp Mill’s proposed effluent treatment system

Nova Scotia’s Environment Minister is ordering Northern Pulp to produce more information and complete a full environmental assessment before he will approve the mill’s proposed wastewater treatment plant and a pipeline bringing the effluent from the plant to the Northumberland Strait.

Very pleased to post the brief but well-argued Save our Seas and Shores submission in response to the Northern Pulp proposal to dump its effluent pipe into the Northumberland Strait. “Northern Pulp’s focus report reads as if they are dumping into pristine waters, rather than the deeply degraded fragile ecosystem the Northumberland Strait and Gulf of St Lawrence have now become in 2019,” write Mary Gorman and Percy Hayne.

Hollywood actor Ethan Hawke lends his voice to the fight to save North Atlantic right whales | The Star

A short documentary narrated by the four-time Academy Award nominee called The Vanishing Call of the Right Whale was unveiled Tuesday in Halifax. Environmentalists are using the documentary to pressure politicians to ban seismic blasting in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where the whales spend the summer.

Ethan Hawke Lending His Voice to Film, New Campaign to Protect Whales and Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Halifax, NS – Starchild Production’s new film The Vanishing Call of the Right Whale featuring Ethan Hawke and Dr. Linda Weilgart will premiere on May 14th in Halifax, NS. The film will kick off a new campaign to protect endangered whales in Canadian waters from the impacts of seismic blasting.

Ottawa withholding Northern Pulp assessment recommendation until after federal election | The Chronicle Herald

The public will not be allowed to know whether a federal environmental assessment was recommended for Northern Pulp’s proposed effluent treatment plant before it is a moot point. According to the legislation governing it, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency had 45 days from Northern Pulp’s Jan.

The Gulf of St. Lawrence is Losing Oxygen Faster Than Almost Any Other Marine Environment

The Gulf of St. Lawrence in eastern Canada is rapidly losing oxygen, declining by as much as 55 percent in some spots since the 1930s – compared to a 2 percent drop globally. Now, new research has found that the region’s dramatic oxygen decline is due largely to climate change and shifts in the major ocean currents that feed the gulf.
